A classic knowledge-based game called "Stadt, Land, Fluss" (German for "City, Country, River") inspired the name of this game.

In "Stadt, Land, Fluss" a random letter is chosen for each round, and players must quickly think of and write down terms beginning with that letter for a predefined set of categories. The first player to finish stops the game for everyone else—much like how "Statt Land, Song." works!

The name "Statt Land, Song." is a playful twist on the original. The word "Stadt" (meaning "City" in German) and "Statt" (meaning "Instead") sound alike but have entirely different meanings.

Ultimately, the name reflects that this is a "Stadt, Land, Fluss"-style game, but instead of naming cities, countries, and rivers, players focus on songs.

How It Works

Every round, a short audio snippet of a song plays. Players race to identify the artist, song title, genre, and release year before anyone else does. The first player to submit their answer locks the round — everyone else must then work quickly with the time remaining. Points are awarded based on accuracy and speed, so knowing your music alone is not enough — you also need quick reflexes!

At the end of each game, a detailed leaderboard reveals who truly is the ultimate music expert in the room. The score breakdown shows exactly how many points were earned per category, so there is always something to improve on next time.

Game Modes

"Statt Land, Song." offers several ways to play:

  • Solo mode — Play at your own pace without any competitors. Perfect for warming up or practicing with a new playlist.
  • Private lobby — Create a lobby and share the code with friends or colleagues. Great for family game nights, team events, or remote hangouts.
  • Global lobby — Jump straight into a shared session with other players from around the world. No setup needed.
  • Songdle — A daily puzzle mode inspired by word-puzzle games like Wordle. Each day a new song is selected. You have up to six attempts to identify it from increasingly revealing clues. Your result is compared against every other player who attempted that day's puzzle, giving you a percentile rank.

Playlists & Music Library

The song library covers a wide range of genres and eras, from timeless classics of the 1950s all the way through to today's chart-toppers. Playlists are curated and updated regularly, and include themed collections such as:

  • Bangers — crowd-favourite hits across all decades
  • Rock Classics — iconic rock anthems
  • Billboard Charts — number-one singles through the years
  • 80s / 90s / 2000s — decade-specific nostalgia trips

Song previews are served via the Apple Music API. All audio content remains the property of the respective rights holders and is used strictly within the bounds of the API terms of service.

Who Built This?

"Statt Land, Song." is an independent hobby project built by a music-loving developer who wanted a fun, fast, and free alternative to the quiz apps that require sign-ups, subscriptions, or are cluttered with paywalls. The game is completely free to play and requires no account to enjoy the core experience.
